Planting Town Gardens
TOWN GARDENS
The Hanover Garden Club designs and plants 16 garden spots around town. We
order all the plants for these gardens. Then in May members plant the
gardens. We have a gardener who is funded by The Hanover Improvement
Society to take care of maintaining these gardens. We also plant the
containers on the wall of the Library.
HANGING BASKETS
The Garden Club embarked on a new project during 2004-2005 to hang 50
flowering baskets on Main and Lebanon Streets. Our town gardener also
takes care of the hanging baskets.
HOLIDAY DECORATIONS
The Club purchases wreaths for the Hanover Town Hall, Howe Library, the
Upper Valley Hostel and the Hanover Fire Department.
STUDENT EDUCATION
At the Club's greenhouse during the second half of the academic year
two eighth graders from the Richmond Middle School's community program learn the basics of planting annuals, perennial flowers; soil, germination, watering and other plant needs. Experienced volunteer gardeners instruct the students, whose carefully tended plants are later sold at the Club's annual Plant Sale in May.
FUNDS GIVEN TO LOCAL LIBRARIES
To promote the purchase of books on gardening The Hanover Garden Club annually makes contributions to libraries in Hanover, Etna, Norwich, Lyme, Lebanon, West Lebanon, Orford(2), Thetford, Fairlee, and Hartford. These funds are earmarked for the purchase of printed material on gardening.
HOSPITAL FLOWERS
Volunteers from the Hanover Garden Club arrange and distribute small floral arrangements to patients at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
MONTSHIRE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE
Summer Camp Scholarships
Also in the spirit of educating young people about nature and growing things. The Hanover Garden Club provides funds for camper scholarships at the science museum.
