Judith is a well-known landscape designer, photographer and traveler. She has recently returned from a lengthy trip to the Southwest and will present a photographic essay of her trip as seen through her landscape designer eyes. She lives in Hanover and has spoken to us in the past. We look forward to her return.

Our Major Fund-Raiser
Garden Club Shed At Pine Knoll Cemetery Route 10, Hanover, NH
Keep this event in mind all year long! Think of plants in your garden which you can divide or perhaps plants you are replacing in your beds - old friends for which you need to find a new home. Unusual varieties of perennials or shrubs are especially sought after by plant sale buyers, but old standbys are very welcome also. When you put your garden to bed in the fall, mark plants that you think you may donate in the spring. If you need help with digging and potting them in the spring, club volunteers will help with that. With the profits of this sale, we fund our community projects as well as paying the monthly Garden Club expenses, such as for speakers, postage, etc.

Speaker: John Forti
John Forti is a nationally recognized garden historian, ethnobotanist and herbalist. He aspires to plant the seeds of history and encourages a more sustainable future to bloom. He is the Curator of Historic Gardens and Landscapes at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, NH, and previously served as the Horticulturalist at Plimoth Plantation Museum in Massachusetts.

Gardening For The Future:
A Checklist For Thoughtful Gardeners
Speaker: Barbara McIlroy
Barbara first discovered her interest in controlling invasives while living in New Jersey next to Jockey Hollow National Historic Park. She tried to interest local organizations like garden clubs, the New Jersey Audobon and the New Jersey Land Trust to the dual problem of deer and invasives. On her move to New Hampshire, she discovered more invasives and began her work to alert the local agencies to the problems. She was instrumental in the creation of the New Hampshire Invasive Species Committee and continues to work with them today. She has been instrumental as well in the protection of Hanover's Tanzi Tract.

Kathy is well known to the Upper Valley for her fabulous Christmas wreaths and other decorations. She operates Cube Mountain Products in Orford. In addition to her holiday business, she also is a very renowned landscaper and grows flowers in her own gardens to market.

Speaker: Henry Homeyer
Well known to all of us, Henry Homeyer is known as "The Gardening Guy". He is a freelance writer, garden designer, and consultant, as well as Associate Editor of People, Places and Plants. He is also a Master Gardener with the New Hampshire Extension Service. Henry has published many books about gardening and also cooking with his garden's produce. He writes a weekly gardening column which appears in many papers including The Valley News.

There will be tasty cookies and other baked goods, Christmas decorations, gifts, and our unique boxwood trees made by our members. There will even be a "coffee corner" where you can share a snack and a chat with your friends. All profits will go the the Julius Mason Town Garden Fund.

Ikebana - A Look At The Differences Between The Major Schools: Sogetsu, Ohara, Ikenobo
Speaker: Ann Davis
Hanover Garden Club member and Program Chair, Ann Davis, spent three years living in Tokyo, Japan. During this time, she studied Ikebana. Although her school of study is Sogetsu, she also learned about the other schools. She was a member of Ikebana International and on the Board of the Tokyo Chapter. She has demonstrated Iakebana to the Club in the past, but this time she will do a comparison.

Sarah Milek of Cider Hill in Windsor, VT, has talked to the Garden Club before, and the Mileks' gardens were recently included in our Gardens Open program. Sarah, an accomplished horticulturalist and well-known creator of beautiful garden displays, will discuss the beauty, culture and landscaping potential of these three garden perennials.

Hanover Garden Club member Margie Carpenter is the curator of the restoration of the gardens at the Justin Morrill House. She has promised to look into the archives and bring us a view of "before" and then bring us up to date on what has happened since we were there during Gardens Open. Margie is also working with The Garden Club of America to provide slides of prominent gardens to be included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute.

Fascinating Flower Arranging
Speaker: Helen Goddard
Helen is also a familiar face at the Hanover Garden Club meetings as she has visited us at least three times. A member of The Garden Club of Buzzards Bay and a very active committee person at the Garden Club of America, Helen has won many distinguished awards for her arrangements all over the United States and Europe. She has won the coveted Fenwick Medal and is the nationally and internationally recognized flower arranging judge. This year she received the Bonnie Martin Achievement Medal at the annual meeting of Garden Club of America.

Organic Gardening
Speaker: Henry Homeyer
Henry Homeyer is a UNH Extension Master Gardener and a gardening columnist with a weekly column that appears in a dozen newspapers in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. He is a VT/NH Associate Editor of People/Places and Plants magazine and has written for the NY Times, Boston Globe and other papers. He is the author of two gardening books, including the just released "The New Hampshire Gardner's Companion: An Insider's Guide to Gardening in the Granite State". Henry also does a monthly commentary for Vermont Public Radio.

Betsy came to us from Andover, MA. She is a trained florist who specializes in weddings, but she writes on plant lore and teaches all over the country. A Discussion of Herbs

Many members of The Hanover Garden Club know our speaker, Patty Talbot. She and her late husband David have operated Talbots' Herb and Perennial Farm on the Hartland-Quechee Road in Hartland for many years. Together they offered classes, workshops and presentations which have been most enthusiastically received. She was delighted to to speak to us about herbs, and gave us the good news that she is continuing to run the business.

Charmaine Rich came to us from East Thetford, VT, where she specializes in growing lilies. She co-chairs the May sale and auction for the New England Daylily Society. She is a member of the American Hemerocallis Society. Her garden, Holdn' Heaven Daylily Garden, is a display garden for Region 4 of the AHS. The garden is open for viewing mid July - August (call first).

Taking the Mystery Out of Common Houseplants

Now that you have been seduced by those beautiful houseplants and brought them home from the supermarket, what do you do with them? Usually they are in bloom when you buy them, but what do you do when they stop flowering or simply start looking less attractive? Our speakers demonstrated the care and propagation of some of the more common plants that seem to be available everywhere. Members of the audience also shared some of their secrets of success (and failures)!

Speaker: Joan Parker
Joan Parker came to us from Carlisle, MA. An active gardner, she is much in demand as a speaker. Her topics range from Wildflower and Meadow Gardening to Holiday Table Centerpieces with much in between. After teaching a course on shapes and angles at Bradford Junior College, she is incorporating concepts of her course in her flower arranging. She is writing a book compiling her many handouts from her lectures and workshops.
